It’s been a busy couple of months at Elk Run! We wanted to keep our readers updated on what’s been happening over at the farm.
We’ll start with the most exciting news… we finally broke ground! With the help of some of our friends at Seattle Tilth, we plowed and tilled about one acre of our field in late October. A couple days later, we were able to plant our very first crop, thanks to the nationwide volunteer event, Make a Difference Day. Several community members braved the cold to help us plant 25 lbs. of garlic and sow cover crop seed throughout the rest of the field. The even was sponsored and organized by the City of Maple Valley and the Maple Valley Rotary Club. BIG thanks to our volunteers, event organizers and partners that helped us get in the ground this year!
In less positive news, we are sad to announce that we did not receive the start-up funding that we requested from the King Conservation District. However, we are actively searching for different grant opportunities and remain very optimistic that we will be able to acquire the funding we need to be a functioning farm come springtime. We appreciate everyone’s support as we move forward!
